2 Point Seven Snowball / 2008-10-16

Hey George, We'd lke to introduce you to Point Seven Snowball. We're two cousins from B.C. out to accomplish a few things: hold our gov't accountable for its promise to increase Official Development Assistance to .7% of our Gross National Income, raise .5 million for the Millennium Villages project in sub-Saharan Africa, and start a SNOWBALL of .7% contributions from Canadians across Canada. We figured we'd lead by example and so we're giving .7% of our lives to cross Canada and volunteer for as many non-profits as possible to show Canadians how easy it is to give .7%. We're also speaking at schools and talking with kids about extreme poverty, Canada's .7% history, the Millennium Development Goals and how they can help by giving .7% of their time or money to the something they care about. .7% is not much. It's 10 min a day, 1.2 hrs a week, or 2.6 days a year. Or if you've got more money than time, .7% is 0/yr or .39 off your paycheque every two wks. We're encouraging all Canadians to incorporate this .7% giving philosophy into their lives and to tell us how they're doing it (through 'The Snowball Effect' page on our website: http://p7s.dreamhosters.com/snowball.html). We'll be bringing these .7% contributions to our government's attention to show it that Canadians care about .7% and therefore the govt should honour its promise to people suffering from extreme poverty. According to Jeffrey Sachs, if Canada and the 21 countries that matched Lester Pearson's .7% promise deliver on this promise by 2015, we can halve the amount of people living in extreme poverty. And if we keep it up until 2025, we can TOTALLY ERADICATE EXTREME POVERTY. Sounds like a plan to us. The media's been good to us so far - we have been featured on CBC News at 6 (Ottawa) and Breakfast TV (Atlantic Canada). Currently, we're in Peterborough and will be moving on to Thunder Bay Oct 23. That said, we'd be THRILLED to alter our schedule and stop by Toronto if you would like to say... invite us to be guests on the Hour. This is such an important issue especially considering the current economic crisis in North America. People are thinking about poverty and I think a little perspective might help. Thanks for your consideration. Looking fwd to your reply! Tracy Clark & Brielle Morgan www.pointsevensnowball.org 604.512.5777
